The First Project for the Beginner
The Pennsy Switcher is Kozo Hiraoka's fourth construction project in 3/4" scale. This is a project especially designed for the first time live steam builder! Through more sharp, detailed photos and incredibly illustrative drawings than ever before, as well as inch dimensioning, Kozo speaks directly to the first-time builder. But even though this is an easy first time project the more experienced builder will find it eminently rewarding!
The Pennsylvania A3 Switcher is the fourth construction project offered by Kozo Hiraoka - a remarkable record of beautiful locomotives described impeccably in word, drawing and photo.
Now, in the 3/4" scale Pennsy Switcher project, Kozo has gone even further; he is so highly detailed and thorough in his description of part fabrication that any novice machinist can build the engine with ease and confidence, fabricating all the parts from stock materials.
And his choice of the Pennsy locomotive is ideal. As an 0-4-0, it does not demand an enormous number of parts, but it is still unique among steam locomotives. Its proportion is suitable for a Live Steam model engine in several technical aspects.
For example, it has a simple wheel arrangement and an ideal geometrical balance between the boiler shell and the firebox, and it has that easily identifiable sloped-back tender. In designing and building the working model of this engine, Kozo's efforts were concentrated upon a single purpose - to establish a guidebook for beginners.
Even if you happen to be an experienced machinist and engine builder, here's a locomotive you would be proud to build and run. The plans also provide for a scaled-up version to 1-1 /2" scale.
Here's Kozo to tell you more about this exciting project!
This book has been designed for a person who is going to build his first Live Steam locomotive. It contains the instructions to fabricate all the parts of a 3/4" scale engine from stock materials.
When I was a novice in this hobby, I tried but failed to find a guidebook with detailed instructions suitable for a newcomer to build a Live Steam engine. Since then, it has been my dream to have a book of complete and easy-to-understand instructions that excite the reader to take action to start this wonderful hobby.
After publishing the three books of the American Geared Locomotives, I challenged myself to write such a book.
Through an extensive survey, the Pennsylvania A3 Switcher was what I selected. I found its proportion just suitable for a Live Steam engine in several technical aspects. For example, it has a simple wheel arrangement and an ideal geometrical balance between the boiler shell and the firebox. In designing and building the working model of this engine, my efforts were concentrated upon a single purpose: to establish a guidebook for beginners.
The parts were designed for easy fabrication and operation. When fabricating the parts, I took a number of photographs of the key steps. In this book, all my techniques and know-how are disclosed as far as they could be expressed in words and pictorial drawings. I devoted a great deal of effort to the illustrations. And to give the drawings "life and vigor," I drafted and inked them by hand without using CAD.
Some supplementary technical articles are provided. One is for silver soldering and another for tools. Still another article is for 1-1/2" scale Live Steamers, covering the drawings and instructions of the critical parts for which particular engineering consideration is required.
In this project, the engine itself - built by myself - was an intermediate product, and this book is the final one. I hope it serves as a useful reference in your workshop and perhaps in your drafting room for designing an engine of your own.
