1905 LOGGING WITH STEAM e-book on CD-R
I have access to a collection of digitally scanned public domain material that included a remarkable book called Logging with Steam, that was originally printed in 1905 by the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Company of New York to promote their specialized steam logging equipment.
Steam power revolutionized logging. Steam skidders and high line rigs allowed steep hillsides to be logged and the logs dragged uphill or downhill as needed to the loading area. Steam railroads allowed logs to be moved to the mill year 'round and not just in Winter on sledges or awaiting the Spring freshets for river drives. However there is much more in this fascinating 120-page book than donkey engines and loaders. Frankly there are things I have never seen before: curious steel cones placed just ahead of a long "train" of logs allowing them to be slithered out of the cypress swamps of the deep South; floating "pull-boats", giant derricks on barges; pile drivers specially designed for the needs of logging railroads; and truly AMAZING cableways designed to move logs and finished lumber around giant sawmills!
I have presented this material as a 120 page e-Book in .pdf format on CD-R. This e-book can be read with Adobe Acrobat, available free. In addition, I have included ALL of the photographs from the original work as .jpeg files which can be used to illustrate homework assignments, newsletters or simply enjoyed. PLUS I have added an additional 85 copyright-free photographs of steam donkey engines, massive loaders, and logging scenes including some great old Lombard Log Haulers working here in the Maine woods in 1926.
