The exclusive American distributor of Moller-Wedel products is Vermont Photonics (see http:// /aboutus.html), and they still offer this 90 degree viewing
autocollimator as their model 229 203, AKR 140/40/14.7 (for over 4 grand). These
numbers refer to the Right (R) angle viewing, the 140mm focal length, the 40mm OD
of the objective tube, and the 14.7 focal length of the eyepiece. The 5 on the front
is presumably the f number (see below). The unit has a like-new appearance and is
The basic function of an autocollimator is to detect and measure a deviation in the
position of a reference reflective surface. The autocollimator projects a collimated
beam of light onto the reflective surface, and when a deviation in the position of that
reflective surface occurs, a deviated beam of collimated light returns to the autocollimator,
and the angle of deviation can be read directly.
Some of the uses of an autocollimator are (1) determining the flatness of surface plates,
(2) verifying the straightness of machine tool movement along its axes, and
(3) determining the parallelism/perpendicularity of end surfaces. You probably know all this
(and more) already or you wouldn't have read this far, so much of this is probably preaching
